One of the great exponents of African music in the world, Cesaria Evora.
Cesaria Evora was born on August 27, 1941 in Mindelo, a small town north of San Vicente Island, the daughter ofa cook and a musician. Success was elusive and had to overcome a severe crisis in 1975, when Cape Verde gained independence from their colony, Portugal and for a decade she stopped singing and fell into alcohol abuse, especially the “grog”, a typical and popular alcoholic beverage made with water or “small beer” ( a weak beer) and rum and Cesaria was able to overcome his drinking problem after a decade of absence since 1985 and returned to singing, particularly in Lisbon.
Cesaria Evora received numerous awards throughout her career, including the Music Prize of UNESCO (1998), a Best Album Grammy in 2004 and got the Gnight of the Legion of Honor of France in 2009. One of the best known songs of Cesaria Evora is “Sodade” (watch the Video) Cape Verdean word that means “nostalgia”and defines the sensation in the Portuguese-speaking world. Cesaria Evora appeared barefoot in tribute to the most disadvantaged, and after more than 45 years of musical career, which includes 14 albums, and although her success came late, she never stopped giving us memorable lyrics.
